Walking Group

Under the leadership of the Mission Group, several members and friends of the Church have decided to form a walking group. Over the past year, many local paths have been trod, sometimes in good weather, others not so good. However, they have always been enjoyable.

The walks normally take place on the first Saturday of the month and the group have visited local places of interest such as the Colzium, the Forth & Clyde Canal walkway, Croy Hill and Dumbreck Marshes.

More recently, the walkers have gone further afield walking along the disused railway line from Milton of Campsie towards Lennoxtown. A coffee/tea is usually enjoyed at the end of the walk. This photograph shows some of the walkers at Auchinstarry Marina after a lovely walk along the canal.

Latest Walk

On Saturday 8 September, 8 of us met at the church hall before heading off in cars to Twechar. The weather was dry although a slight nip could be felt in the air - autumn time! The canal path is very good - easy walking with no pot-holes. Without realising it, most of us agreed it took longer than we thought so by the time we reached Scintillation, a cup of coffee was very welcome.  As a point of interest, about two thirds along the way is the site of Auchendavy Fort which was part of the Antonine Wall. It would have been nice to see this site but the hedgerow obscured our vision.  We did, however, see a couple of swan families and also the Gypsy Princess barge at Kirkintilloch with a few passengers!  All agreed this was a good walk albeit longer than normal - we had all heated up by now!

For our next walk on Sat 13 October, we will meet at the carpark behind the Coachman Hotel at 10.30 and walk to the Colzium. Come along and join us, tea or coffee stop will either be at Colzium or Coachman on return. Next walk November.

On Saturday 4 August, on rather a dreich day approximately twelve of us walked from the Marina along the side of the canal to the Dullatur road and return to the Boathouse for coffee/tea! The next walk will take place on the second Saturday in September (8th) due to the previous weekend being back packing for Mary's Meals taking place.  We will meet at 10.15 at the church; drive to Twechar and walk along the canal to Kirkintilloch. Usual stop for coffee/tea and return - come and join us. Our plans are always subject to change depending on the wishes and circumstances of the group on the day.

Our July walk saw us walking along the path following the old railway line from Lennoxtown. It was a very pleasant walk in lovely weather with some lovely views along the way. We finished up sitting in the gardens at Glazert Bank Hotel having tea and coffee.

The group is steadily growing in numbers; we have enjoyed some lovely walks and lots of laughs along the way.  We look forward to more joining us for easy walking in good company - what's not to like?

The Walking Group had a lovely walk in the sunshine on Saturday 9 June 2018. We walked from Lidl’s car park in Kirkintilloch to Milton of Campsie where we enjoyed tea/coffee and goodies sitting outside at Billington’s before returning to Kirkintilloch along the same path. We had 3 new members with us who all enjoyed the walk and the company.

These two photographs show views from Croy Hill down towards Auchinstarry Marina and Kilsyth in the distance. Our church can be seen in both (but more clearly in the right hand photo with Auchinstarry quarry in the foreground). We certainly have some lovely scenery on our doorstop.
